DL-Phenylalanin (also known as DLPA) is a synthetic combination of the D- and L-forms of the amino acid phenylalanine. It is used in the biosynthesis of proteins and as a dietary supplement for its purported analgesic and antidepressant effects.

Chemistry

DL-Phenylalanin is made up of equal parts D-Phenylalanine and L-Phenylalanine. The L-form is a precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine, whereas the D-form may be involved in the modulation of pain signals and mood.
