Brugmansia (also known as angel's trumpet or misha) is a genus of seven species of poisonous flowering plants belonging to the family Solanaceae, it is a popular ornamental plant closely related to the Datura genus of the same family. The deliriant effects are primarily induced by the anticholinergic tropane alkaloids scopolamine, hyoscyamine and atropine.[1] Decoctions and physical application of various plant parts have traditionally been used by indigenous tribes to treat a wide variety of health conditions.[2]
Recreational use in the context of shamanic rituals was common in ancient cultures.[3]
While often found as an ornamental plant all brugmansia varieties are considered extinct in the wild.[4]
