Mushroom ethanol extraction

Psilocybin mushrooms can be ingested in a variety of ways. One of the most efficient ways of ingesting the mushroom is via an extraction. The main constituents of magic mushrooms, psilocybin and psilocin, are high soluble in the solvent ethanol (alcohol). This tek yields a crude, semi-pure crystalline extract that can be ingested to produce the full range of effects of psilocybin mushrooms while mitigating some or all of the nausea and bodily discomfort commonly experienced.

Materials

  1. Psilocybin mushrooms (dried)

Procedure

1. Drying mushrooms

Make sure the mushrooms are dry for this extraction, you don't want water in your solution. Psilocybin crystals love to absorb water or moisture from the air, like a sponge. If water is absorbed will cause your end product to be a sludge or hash like texture (Which is still edible) once the ethanol has evaporated. Too make sure that the ethanol will pull all the chemicals out of the mushroom you need to grind the mushrooms up to a fine powder, this will increase the surface area that the ethanol can come into contact with.

2. Adding solvent

Once you have your powdered mushrooms ready you want to measure out 10ml ethanol for every gram of mushroom powder. The ethanol should be 75% or higher. If you have 100 grams of mushroom you will would want 1L of ethanol.

(Optional) To save wasting alcohol, a soxhlet extractor can be used. Set on a very low heat, you would only need about 1/3 (maybe less) of the amount of alcohol you would need if you weren't to use one.

If you aren't using a soxhlet extractor then go ahead and drop all of your mushroom powder into a glass jar then add your measured out ethanol on top. Put the lid on and shake the jar like your life depends on it. After a couple of minutes shaking the jar place it somewhere dark and cool. Shake the jar 2 times a day for about a week.

3. Evaporating the solvent

After a week of agitating the jar a few times a day it is now time to filter off the unwanted mushroom sludge. You will need a source of heat for this step. Place your jar in a pot then use something made of metal to lift the jar up from the bottom to limit direct contact of the heat. Once the mixture starts to boil turn the heat off. Get another jar and put a coffee filter on top and strain the mixture. Make sure the mixture is this hot because the psilocybin and psilocin are dissolved in the ethanol and will start to recrystallised once the mixture cools down. If there is still mushrooms bits in the mixture you will have to restart this step.

(Optional) If you want to save the solvent (and don't hate the planet) you can use a distillation apparatus to reclaim the ethanol. Additional you can also use a vacuum filter instead of gravity filtering with a coffee filter.
